As a leading air conditioning company, when we first learned about the intended phase-out of R410a refrigerant, we were really keen to trial the latest R32 refrigerant within a real-world application, putting our own money where our mouth is, in trialling the latest equipment.
Back in 2017, we decided the best way to perform the test would be to install two brand-new split systems within our own head office in Essex, each heating and cooling separate areas within the building.
After decommissioning and removing our original air conditioning systems running R410a refrigerant, we installed two of the latest split systems, from Daikin and Mitsubishi, each running on the latest R32 refrigerant.
Following the installation and commissioning of both systems, they have seen typical office use and have been routinely serviced in line with their respective manufacturers guidelines.
Satisfied that both systems met with our expectations, we began rolling out R32 systems to all of our customers with effect of January 2020 and have been pleased with the results.
At the time of writing this case study, eight years later in 2025, both systems have performed exceptionally well, have delivered energy savings and have proven to be absolutely trouble free considering essential maintenance only.
The benefits of air conditioning systems using R32 Refrigerant include:
✓ Lower GWPs’s (675 as opposed to 2088 of R410a)
✓ Up to 20% less refrigerant charge.
✓ Improved efficiency, lowering carbon emissions and reducing energy costs
✓ Low-toxic, and, although flammable, is very difficult to ignite.
✓ Zero ozone depletion potential and as a single component is easy to recycle
